Born in Singapore and raised in Nepal, Prabal Gurung moved to NYC in 1999, where he attended Parsons School of Design and interned for Donna Karan. After working for Cynthia Rowley and then Bill Blass, he launched his own label.
I was lucky enough to attend his show last weekend and it was definitely the most exciting show I went to during fashion week. I literally had goosebumps for the entire show. The collection was inspired by his homeland and featured fitted jackets and slouchy pants, with transparent tops borrowed from the traditional kurtas that his mother and sister wear at home in Nepal. The prints and color palette of the collection was informed by artist Anish Kapoor. Prior to the show, I spotted one of my favorite fashion bloggers, Rumi Neely, so I raced down to take a couple photos of her. I also had Kate Bosworth sitting 2 seats in front of me, but I didn’t realize it was her until it was too late to get a photo. I walked out of the venue feeling so inspired and excited, which is how you should feel after seeing a fashion show that is so beautiful and well-executed.
