One Saturday afternoon, I found myself at Smorgasburg, a big food stall market on the waterfront at East River State Park, Williamsburg. Before I even got inside the gates, I saw a girl walking out with with some kind of crazy-looking dessert and I thought ‘That’s what I’m getting!’ I saw the sign and figured out that the dessert is called ‘Wowfulls’, an authentic Hong Kong egg waffle served with ice cream and other toppings.
These egg waffles originated in Hong Kong in the 1950s and were one of the most famous street foods. The owners of Wowfulls wanted to bring one of their favorite, yet almost forgotten, childhood snacks to New York City, and share it with everyone. The waffles are made with a sweet egg batter, which is then cooked on a honeycomb griddle, giving the waffles their signature look.
The day that I went, they had two choices: the original ‘Gai Dán Gai’ egg waffles topped with ice cream, fresh strawberries & strawberry pocky, or the Matcha Green Tea with White Chocolate Chip Wowfull ($9), with ice cream, mochi & green tea pocky. I chose the Matcha Green Tea, which has tiny white chocolate chips mixed into the waffle batter. So delicious! For my toppings I got vanilla ice cream, mochi, condensed milk & fruity pebbles.
Wow! These waffles really live up to their name! Crispy on the outside, and light & fluffy on the inside, I really enjoyed the addition of white chocolate in the mix. You may want to find somebody to share with though….or do as I did and eat the whole thing yourself, then have to sit down for 30 minutes as you overdid it.
You can find Wowfulls at 3 Smorgasburg markets every weekend.
