If you love Sichuan food then head to Hot Kitchen in the East Village. I wasn’t really familiar with Sichuan cuisine until I came to New York (this is all thanks to my friend Sunny for introducing me to it) but now I can’t get enough. Essentially, it’s a style of Chinese cuisine originating from the Sichuan province in Southwestern China, that is filled with bold flavors with lots of garlic, chili peppers and the unique Sichuan pepper.
We ordered the ‘Assorted Spicy Wok’ ($26) which has beef, chicken, sausage, beef tripe, shrimp, squid and vegetables. If you’re like me and can’t stand the sight, let alone the taste of tripe, you can ask them to leave it out. The vegetables include lotus root, scallions, potato and chili peppers. This dish had just the right amount of spice and is best shared with 2 or 3 people with a side of rice.
