Roll out the green colored treats for St Patrick’s Day! I visited Red Hook, Brooklyn in the weekend, where the bakery ‘Baked’ is situated. The bright green of the Tri-Color slice immediately caught my eye. Like a cake, but in slice form, the cake is almond flavored with apricot preserves between the layers and topped with chocolate.
Baked’s founders, Matt Lewis and Renato Poliafito wanted to “open a great American bakery that wasn’t a cupcake shop”. They both came from the advertising world and gave that up to follow their true passion: baked goods. Baked opened in 2005 and since then has been featured in Good Housekeeping, O Magazine, The New York Times and on CNN just to name a few. What I really like about Matt and Renato is that they do extensive research to come up with new and exciting baked goods. They also use quality ingredients such as Valrhona cocoa and Callebaut chocolate, real bourbon and three types of malt. If you go there, the hardest thing is deciding what to choose. Between the layer cakes, whoopie pies, cookies and the signature ‘Brookster’ (a cross between a cookie and a brownie) there is something for everyone. Expect future posts from me about Baked. Now that I’ve made the trek out to Red Hook (it’s not really that bad getting a train then a bus), I’ll be visiting there again soon.
