I didn’t know what Mofongo was until this past weekend. My boyfriend suggested we go to a restaurant in Washington Heights called La Casa Del Mofongo, which features Caribbean and Latin cuisine. Mofongo consists of green plantains which are deep-fried until they are crisp on the outside and dense on the inside, which are then mashed with broth, olive oil, garlic, pork crackling and seasoning. My mofongo also had shredded chicken inside. Mofongo is an Afro-Puerto Rican dish which is also a staple meal in the Dominican Republic, where plantains are the third most-important crop after rice and beans. At La Casa Del Mofongo, I chose the Mofongo with goat ($13). The first thing I said after one bite was ‘Why haven’t I tried this before?!’ It was love at first bite. This dish was so tasty it took great will-power to not eat everything on my plate, even when I was full. The goat was tender and delicious, similar to lamb but with more earthiness. The restaurant is loud and vibrant, with merengue music completing the experience. I think I’ve started yet another food addiction!
