I’d been wanting to try Mint Cakery for quite some time, but never made the trek to Point Chevalier. Ellerslie is much closer to where my mother lives, so now I’m back home until the end of December, I knew I had to pay the new space a visit.
Mint Cakery now has a much larger space after moving from Point Chevalier, its home for the past 2.5 years, to Ellerslie. At 40 square metres, the new cafe dwarfs the previous one at only 18 square metres.
Mint Cakery is owned by Michelle Bevan, who started out selling her cakes at the Mt Albert Market. Michelle and her partner Darren Jarrett also own Table Talk, a cafe in Remuera.
The cafe is minimalist and airy, with white walls and high wooden tables with black bar stools. A few bits of greenery complete the interior, along with a mint-green neon sign to match the cafe’s name.
I had a hard time choosing what to get, everything looks so divine! I eventually decided on a Passionfruit & Strawberry Pavlova doughnut ($6) and a Dark Chocolate, Plum & Pistachio cake ($6) to share with my Mum. The doughnut was light and fluffy, oozing with a delicious passionfruit filling. The cake was the perfect balance of sweet and tart, with the rich chocolate crumb, chocolate ganache & buttercream, and a hint of juicy plum.
If you’re a serious tea drinker like me, definitely don’t skip the tea from Forage and Bloom. I had the ‘Revive’ green tea, and it was next level. My Mum also raved about her Flight Coffee cappuccino. Also on the menu are baked cheesecakes, a classic lemon meringue cake and apple salted caramel chelsea buns.
Mint Cakery is open Monday through Saturday, and offers cake decorating classes on Sundays, as well as private events such as baby showers and hens do’s.
