Ever since I moved to New York City back in 2012, I’ve been enjoying Levain’s famous monster cookies. My go-to flavor is the Chocolate Walnut. But for whatever reason, I’d never tried the Oatmeal Raisin cookie ($4). Big mistake on my part! This cookie really holds its own, alongside the chocolate versions (there’s also a Dark Chocolate Chocolate Chip, and a Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip). The Oatmeal Raisin is rich and buttery, with the signature chewy center and is full of juicy raisins.
While you’re there, don’t skip the Blueberry Muffin ($3). These regularly sell out, so be sure to grab one early in the day. Full of plump blueberries, this muffin is to die for, with a delectable crunch thanks to the sanding sugar on top.
My latest addiction (I had two in one week!) is the Bomboloncini ($2.25). Similar to the Italian doughnut, the Bomboloni, Levain’s Bomboloncini is baked, not fried, and contains a seedless raspberry jam and is dusted with powdered sugar. The owners of Levain decided to create their own version after eating them in Florence, Italy. I fell in love with the wonderfully soft and pillowy bread, which doesn’t feel heavy on the stomach at all, and is actually (believe it or not) low in fat and sugar. The raspberry jam is the perfect filling as it’s not too sweet and tastes homemade.
So next time you pay a visit to Levain Bakery, make sure to grab a few of these goodies, as well as the chocolate cookies.
