The other day I met up with a friend for lunch and she suggested going to Little Bird Unbakery in Ponsonby. Little Bird is known for its made-from-scratch, organic and mostly raw food. Their philosophy is that the food should not only taste amazing, but make you feel amazing as well. The focus at Little Bird is to use only the best raw organic ingredients, and many of these ingredients are soaked or sprouted to get the most health benefits and increase nutritional value.
I chose the Kimchi Pancake (NZD$16.50) which is made with a chickpea batter and dressed with a cashew aioli, and topped with a lettuce and radish salad with black garlic dressing. The flavours of this dish were incredible. The cashew aioli was so tasty, I want to try my hand at making it myself. The pancake was perfectly cooked, with a crispy outer layer and soft and fluffy on the inside. And it did make me feel good: the portion was just right and I didn’t want anything else until dinner time. Which is really surprising as I’m a huge snacker and love my afternoon treats, but it must be due to all that raw food goodness. The cafe also has a large display cabinet filled with sweet treats, which I can’t wait to try on my next visit.
