Cheesecake is either a hit or miss for me. Either it’s too rich or I don’t like the crust or the fruit isn’t great. That’s why I was blown away by the Key Lime Cheesecake ($7) at Epicerie Boulud. Every component of this cheesecake works. And that’s a very hard thing to master. Tart and tangy, with the added bonus of coconut, I didn’t have any problem finishing the whole slice myself. The crust was amazing. The graham cracker crumbs are mixed with coconut giving it a delicate flavor, unlike many cheesecakes. Then comes the vanilla cheesecake, which is studded with the little black flecks of the vanilla bean. A key lime gelee tops the cheesecake, with cheesecake mousse and toasted coconut flakes completing the dessert. This was also the first cheesecake I have seen with a decorative (but also edible) piece of white chocolate framing the back of the slice. I initially thought it was plastic so it was lucky I investigated by taking a bite so as not to waste the chocolate!
