For authentic Greek food with a modern flair, head to Ovelia in Astoria. My Greek friend ELeana is a regular at this restaurant, and we went there last weekend for her birthday dinner. Ovelia offers a selection of hot or cold meze, which are small plates great for sharing and for getting to try a variety of food. The ‘Kalamari Gemisto’ ($12, pictured) was a stand-out, with whole calamari stuffed with chopped green and red peppers, feta and bacon. Surrounded by baby squid, this dish is packed with flavor and was one of my favorites of the night. Other meze we tried included the Tzatziki with pita bread, the Fried Feta Cubes with sesame seeds and honey (a must-try!) and the Spanakopita (hand-wrapped spinach pie).
