My Mum and I had friends visiting from California last week, and they chose ‘Jewel of India’ in Mission Bay to catch up over lunch. The restaurant is now under new management and has undergone renovations. The service was friendly and welcoming and the restaurant itself feels warm & inviting, with very comfortable chairs (a must for a leisurely lunch!). We started off the meal with some appetisers: Pakora (4 pieces for $6), Samosas (2 pieces for $6) and Papadom (4 pieces for $2). The Pakoras were tasty and pretty spicy.
For mains we ordered curries: Mango Chicken ($15), Chicken Tikka Masala ($15) and Butter Chicken ($15) and a side of rice and Garlic Naan ($3.50). Without a doubt, get the garlic naan to go with your meal! I couldn’t get enough of this homemade bread. The chicken was tender and the curry so flavourful.
I also tried a Mango Lassi ($4) for the first time….how I have gone most of my life without having this drink is beyond me. A drink primarily made with mango pulp and yogurt, it pairs so fantastically with the curries. Our guests commented on how it was so nice to not be rushed: we got to enjoy our meal and conversation without feeling like we were taking too long (even though we were the last ones to leave). This is the mark of a great restaurant and one that makes you feel like you will definitely return for more fabulous food in a warm atmosphere.
