I would have to say one of the things I miss most about New York City life is the rampant availability of fresh, delicious doughnuts. So on my doughnut hunt back home in Auckland, Little & Friday came up on my radar as serving the best doughnuts in the city. Of course, I made a beeline for their mothership cafe in Belmont as soon as I had some free time. They also have a smaller cafe in Newmarket and have plans to expand further. Owner Kim Evans started out selling her baked goods at weekend markets, then selling out of a former butchers shop only on Fridays (hence the name), and Little & Friday is now a 7 day operation and Kim has also put out two cookbooks. Now back to the doughnuts: the raspberry & crème-diplomat filled doughnuts ($5.50). These babies are heaven on a plate…..that’s if they even make it to the plate. Based on the old-school jam and cream doughnut, theirs is made current with homemade raspberry coulis and a mixture of crème pâtissière (a kind of custard) and softly whipped cream. So worth the hype. This was the perfect start to my busy day, which later involved walking up Mt. Victoria….a great thing to do if you’re in the Belmont area, as Devonport is only minutes away. As well as baked goods, Little & Friday also does breakfast, lunch and dinner. I can’t wait to go back and try their coconut bread french toast and the banana caramel doughnut. 😛
