I had been wanting to visit L.A. Burdick Chocolate for a while and I finally got to try one of their decadent cakes this week. I went for the Chocolate Coconut Cake which is as good as it looks. With layers of coconut meringue and chocolate cake mixed with shredded coconut, the hidden component of this cake is the lime. It has a lime buttercream frosting, which gives the cake a very slight but welcome tang. The cake is topped with toasted coconut flakes. Don’t be fooled the the smallish size of the cake slice. It is so rich and flavorful that you wouldn’t want it to be any bigger. The richness does not make it a heavy cake though; it’s crunchiness combined with lightness make this one delicious cake that won’t leave you feeling like you overdid it.
Unfortunately I didn’t have room for the L.A. Burdick signature mice and penguin chocolates, but I will definitely try them upon my return. The white mice have a cinnamon interior with a hint of port and the ears are toasted almonds. Watch this space.
