The month of May is Cheesecake Month at Breads Bakery. And the star of the show (for me anyway) is the Cheesecake Babka ($14.95). For May only, you can also get your hands on a lemon ricotta cheesecake and a pomegranate cheesecake in a jar. The classic New York cheesecake is available all year round. To say this Cheesecake Babka is amazing, is an understatement. This is without a doubt, one of the best things I have ever eaten in my whole life. Our office has a tradition of getting something sweet for everyone to enjoy on Fridays. So this particular Friday, we decided to get the Cheesecake Babka. I couldn’t shut up about how good it was, and the others couldn’t stop marveling at how exactly they do it. How does Breads Bakery make something so damn perfect, that it’s the stuff of dreams?
Breads Bakery owner, Gadi Peleg, hails from Israel and first introduced Cheesecake Month two years ago for the Jewish holiday, Shavuot. Cheesecake is always eaten during this time, and Gadi wanted to make the holiday more inclusive for everybody. Breads already holds the honor of making the best babka in New York City. Their famous chocolate babka is also a must-try. If you are new to the city and haven’t tried one yet, definitely put it on your list.
Babka has a rich, buttery, brioche-like crumb and is a favorite among New Yorkers and visitors alike. The half-yeasted bread, half-cake hybrid lends itself beautifully to any time of day; whether it be breakfast, brunch, dessert or as a snack.
The hardest part is limiting yourself to only one piece. Each piece eaten demands another; I really do find it quite addictive.
You will be very hard pressed to find a more delightful, satisfying treat. I just might have to buy another one tomorrow!
