Fred’s is situated up a short alley-way at the corner of Ponsonby Road and Franklin Road, with a lovely courtyard but since it’s June and chilly, we opted to sit inside. When I walked in, I immediately felt like I was in a Brooklyn cafe, with the exposed brick and retro feel. Small and cozy, we didn’t have to wait for a table going on a Tuesday. I hear the weekend is a different story. The menu is small but well-thought-out. I ordered the Menemen ($15), two Turkish-style baked eggs with roasted baby tomatoes, peppers, jalapeños, garlic yogurt and sour dough bread. My Mum got the mushroom bagel ($12.50) with olive oil, mayo, rocket & feta. The food arrived quickly and it was excellent. The menemen had an ample amount of roasted tomatoes and peppers and the jalapeños gave it an extra kick. The sourdough was fresh and made a perfect spoon for dipping in the sauce. We also got the tart rhubarb soda. Fred’s makes their own syrup and I like that they only use free range eggs and support local suppliers when they can. I hear they make a mean Black Doris Plum milkshake, so I will have to try that next time.Tart rhubarb soda
