Bawnmore beef jerky and biltong is the only protein snack range made in the United States exclusively from Irish beef.
I met with the founder Ed Russell at a recent event organised by Carns Media, where he discussed what sets his jerky and biltong apart from the competition. First, it’s all natural and sustainably produced. The Irish beef comes from farmers whose families have been stewards of the land for several generations. Each piece of Irish beef is fully traceable back to the farm (and herd) where it came from. Second, it’s all gluten-free, low-carb and contains no added sugar, unlike may other brands. This makes Bawnmore products the perfect snack anytime, for health-conscious consumers.
Irish beef differs from others as Ireland has the perfect climate for growing grass. Therefore, Irish cattle get to enjoy a diet of grass all year round. Irish grass-fed butter and cheese are already very popular in the USA. The average herd size is less than 100, on farms that are on average 100 acres.
Ed Russell was born and raised amid the farmlands of Ireland, and has now spent half of his life in the United States. He took a real liking to grass-fed beef jerky and began making his own at home. It was expensive to buy in the store, and often not available online. So once Ed learned that Ireland had received permission to export beef to the United States, he knew this was his chance to share his grass-fed beef jerky passion with consumers across the country.
The Bawnmore range includes the Original Jerky, Rendang Jerky and Biltong. The original flavour features Colman’s mustard, black pepper, garlic and a hint of smoke. This one was my favourite in taste. The rendang was inspired by the Southeast Asian dish of beef rendang, with a multi-layer flavor featuring aromatic hints of citrus and clove, mixed with coconut and the heat of Thai chili. I enjoyed the slight spiciness of this one! The biltong is true South African style and is air-dried and sliced thin. Thick strips of sliced Irish beef are left to hang and dry for several days at room temperature. The strips are then cross-sliced to make the biltong. Absolutely delicious!
The Bawnmore range is available to purchase on Amazon.com and in select stores. Visit their website for more information: https://www.bawnmore.com
