If you’re like me, and you’ve been to Mexico and are craving the ‘real deal’ Mexican cuisine then head to Tortilleria Nixtamal in Corona, Queens. Not only is the food authentic but the prices are so affordable you can make sure to stuff yourself full of delicious food.
The specials of the day were plantains topped with avocado sauce and Queso fresco ($4) and a cactus soup with dry shrimp and chickpeas ($5). It was no question I had to order the plantains, they’ve quickly become one of my favorite foods since moving to New York City from New Zealand. I had heard their tamales ($3) were a must-try so I also ordered the mole tamale with chicken. The plantains with the avocado sauce were out-of-this-world good. The sauce had a hint of spiciness to it and the crumbled cheese completed it perfectly. The mole tamale was flavorful and hot, just what I needed on a freezing winter day.
The masa (corn dough) used at Tortilleria Nixtamal is 100% corn cooked the traditional, ancient way every day. And the best thing is you can purchase the tortillas to take home for $2.50 per pound. (around 15). You can also purchase their sauces in 3 different sizes. I bought the salsa verde and 2 pounds of tortillas and froze half and used the rest to make enchiladas at home.
Tortilleria Nixtamal’s tagline is “Experience the essence of Mexico without going to the airport”. That says it all really.
