Last Friday my friend and I had a very enjoyable meal at Hummus Place in the West Village. For an appetizer we ordered the stuffed grape leaves ($4.50), which were served warm with a mint yogurt sauce. For my main I ordered the Hummus Place Platter ($13) which comes with either white or whole wheat pitas or corn tortillas. The platter includes Hummus Masabacha (topped with whole chick peas, olive oil and spices), Hummus Fava (whole fava beans, tahini, hard-boiled egg, olive oil and spices), Hummus Tahini (tahini, olive oil and spices) and Hummus Mushrooms (topped with sauteed mushrooms, onions, olive oil and spices. The two that stood out the most were definitely the Tahini and the Mushroom hummus. Tahini is made from sesame seeds that are soaked in water and then then crushed to separate the bran from the kernels. The tahini hummus was flavorful and smooth, with a a good amount of garlic and a toasted, slightly bitter taste, which comes from the tahini. I don’t think I’d ever had a mushroom hummus before, but after trying the one at Hummus Place I’ll definitely be seeking it out. The mushrooms were tender and the hummus was so creamy and felt wonderful on the tongue. Since hummus is a health food you can eat it knowing you’re doing your body some good. And you can justify having dessert afterwards (well I do).
