It was late afternoon and I needed a pick-me-up. Since I don’t drink coffee, that pick-me-up is always something sweet. I came across Ferrrara Bakery and had to go inside. Originally called ‘Cafe A. Ferrara’, it opened in 1892 by Enrico Scoppa and Antonio Ferrara, an opera impresario and showman. The bakery became well-known for its freshness as they baked things up to four times a day. Today, Farrara is operated by the fifth generation. Along with the specialty pastries and cakes, you can also pick up gelato or a gelato drink such as Italian Egg Cream. The selection was so great I had a hard time choosing. Eventually the chocolate won out thanks to my afternoon craving and I got the Chocolate Truffle Cake. Absolutely delicious. I can’t wait to go back and try the Bosco Tart, which features almond paste, Bavarian cream and mixed berries. It’s a really good thing you walk everywhere in New York City, to compensate for all these treats!
You can purchase gelato outside the bakery
