The other day I was scrolling through a slideshow on Zagat.com about 10 new dessert shops in Manhattan. One in particular caught my eye: Treat House. The mini rice krispie bars looked so cute and adorable and make a welcome change from cupcakes. Don’t get me wrong, I still love a good cupcake, but I don’t remember the last time I had a rice krispie treat. I do remember how they were always a staple on any child’s birthday party food table. Treat House has developed dozens of exciting flavors such as maple pecan, blueberry pie, birthday cake and s’mores just to name a few. They also offer breakfast bars, homemade marshmallows, pops and ice cream bars. The thing I really like is the quality of ingredients. The marshmallow contains raw cane sugar, no corn syrup, which can be pretty tricky to find these days.
Treat House was born from an idea after having a bake sale. Chris and Jennifer Russell’s sons needed to raise money for charity. So they decided to make rice krispie bars and sell them on their street. The bake sale was such a success, Chris and Jennifer felt inspired and contacted Wendy Israel, the former pastry chef of two of their restaurants. Wendy came on board and the treat ideas flowed. Now, they are also joined by friend and 20-year-restaurant veteran Michael Trenk. Treat House donates 10 cents from every treat sold and $1 from every t-shirt sold to The Food Bank for New York City. This is very important to the owners, to continue to give back to the community.
The hardest part about going to Treat House is of course deciding which flavors to get. I decided to get a pack of 4 and chose s’mores, chocolate peanut butter, cookies & cream and chocolate mint.
S’mores: Graham crackers and chocolate topped with mini toasted marshmallows. Garnished with a mini graham cracker and chocolate sandwich.
Chocolate Peanut Butter: Rich chocolate and smooth peanut butter. Topped with chocolate ganache and a peanut butter cup.
Cookies & Cream: Chopped up Oreo cookies and vanilla marshmallow. Garnished with cocoa and a mini Oreo cookie.
Chocolate Mint: mint marshmallow with dark chocolate chips. Topped with chocolate ganache and a Peppermint Pattie.
It’s hard to choose a favorite, they were all so moreish, but if I had to, I would choose the chocolate mint. The mint flavor was spot-on and not artificial tasting like so many mint sweets are. It reminded me of my favorite ice cream, only the marshmallow took it to a whole new level. The chocolate peanut butter one was like peanut butter heaven. I actually couldn’t wait to eat the treats for dessert so I ate them before dinner. I think a theme is starting to happen and I better do my best to make it stop. But who can resist these crispy, gooey, chocolatey little packages of happiness?! I wish I had more to eat now….
